Last time we checked in on the Xena Reboot, screen writer and producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach (The 100, Lost, Charmed) confirmed that Xena and Gabrielle would be a couple. The queer world rejoiced! While queers everywhere enjoyed the subtle lesbian context in the 90s, now the show was to evolve with us, storm out of the closet with raised sword and walking stick to engage in adventures as a queer couple! However, it is with a heavy heart that I report that the reboot might not happen. According the The Mary Sue, Grillo-Marxuach left the project because of "creative differences."
I'm heartbroken to have left the Xena project over insurmountable creative differences. The character is dear to me, and to millions of fans worldwide, and I truly believe that now—more than ever—a land in turmoil cries out for a hero. I truly hope that the alchemy of creative elements that has to come together to make possible either a reboot or revival of this amazing property will someday coalesce, and that Xena will return in a way that does honor to what came before while looking to the future.
While the news that Grillo-Marxuach left the project came out in April, there are still tweets that support the #XenaRevival hash tag.
There hasn't been any news reported that NBC is looking for another producer. There can be many guesses as to what that means, especially to our community, but here's to hoping that a new producer is found, and that NBC still honors Xena and Gabrielle's epic coming out.
My hope is that the huge success of Wonder Woman (directed by Patty Jenkins) will inspire a woman to take over the project. That would make this queer heart soar! But I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But don't worry, we'll keep you posted with the reboots progress, or unfortunate demise. Until then, here's a GIF to give you the feels.
