Is Katee Sackhoff Our Carol Danvers? Starbuck Cagily Confirms Meetings with Marvel

First we learned that Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron would feature the Scarlet Witch, whose casting hasn't yet been revealed, and heard Joss himself lament at the lack of onscreen superheroines.

Then, we heard on that Marvel Studios producer Louis D'Esposito can read the writing on the wall:

"There's obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero," he says. "… [W]e have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there's an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?"

Which seems to indicate that Marvel is actively seeking to transfer one of its top-shelf female superheroes to the big screen.

So, NOW, enter Katee Sackhoff, the quintessential nerd-bait favorite after five years of blowing Cylons out of the sky, doing European press for Riddick (also starring Vin Diesel, recently confirmed as the voice of Groot in Marvel's now-shooting Guardians of the Galaxy). Talking with the Schmoes Know podcast crew, Sackhoff was asked what has become the million-dollar question in Hollywood geek circles: Have you heard anything from Disney / Marvel, yet? Sackhoff, who should stay the hell away from the poker table, revealed:

"Um… There’s been some stuff going on. Um… there’s been a lot of checking of availability… I don’t quite know exactly… I don’t know… there’s been a lot of questions about the first quarter of next year and then the…"

Yes, it's vague, partly because the jerky hosts were talking over their guest and partly because she's a young actress talking about meetings and schedules, but to eagle-eyed nerds scanning industry trades and rumor mills for the latest crumb of Marvel casting news, that's a lot. Checking an actor's availability suggests their presence on a shortlist for consideration. Recall that Diesel teased out his meetings with Marvel for months before officially confirming what pretty much everyone had already guessed.

Other names swirling around include the original Black Widow (she dropped out of Iron Man 2 because of scheduling conflicts, paving the way for ScarJo) Emily Blunt and another Brit, Luther's Ruth Wilson

Remember Geeks OUT's own fan-cast summary of statuesque actresses for a Captain Marvel movie from last May? Do we like Katee's chances for Carol Danvers? I would LOVE to see her pop up at the end of Avengers 2 in an Air Force uniform or as a SHIELD pilot, or some other such reveal. So keep your eyes and ears peeled, geeks, and share what you learn here!
