I Love You, Flame Con

“You’re really sweaty,” my friend said to me.

“I know,” I said.

I was covering Steve Orlando’s table for him and boy was I sweaty. But, I mean, you don’t go to a comic convention and NOT expect to sweat—especially one called Flame Con.

My first job ever was working at my local comic book shop at a mall in New Jersey—the same comic book shop that Oscar frequents in, one of my favorite books, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

I first started reading comics when I discovered that the X-Men Arcade Game wasn’t just a video game—it was a comic book too! So, while I was a very late bloomer (I didn’t come out until I was 19), Teen-Me would’ve been just as thrilled as 32-Year-Old-Me about Flame Con.

And it was everything I could’ve hoped for. I got to hangout with the very awesome Cecil Baldwin and Dylan Marron from Welcome to Night Vale. I got to be part of a panel discussing all things LGBTQ and the internet. I got to interview the wonderful authors Sara Farizan and Adam Silvera. I got to drink with the delightful Phil Jimenez, James Tynion, and Steve Orlando. It was Queer Geek Heaven and I couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of it.

And wonderful places like The Mary Sue, Next Magazine, Logo, and many other places covered Flame Con and wrote some really nice things about the event. I run our Geeks Out Twitter and looking through our Twitter on Sunday and seeing so many people thanking us for creating such a safe space for Queer geeks really made me tear up. The internet can sometimes be a really negative place—so, it’s nice to see so many people responding positively to Flame Con.

Sorry, I’m just forever the girl at the end of Mean Girls who has a LOT of feelings. So, here’s to next year and to seeing Flame Con get even bigger (and, hopefully, a little less sweaty for my sake)!
