9 Relatable X-Men Quotes Queer Nerds Could Use Right Now

In the Land Before Time known as the early 90s, there were basically two animated superhero options: the more traditional (albeit, still super awesome) Batman: The Animated Series and the less traditional X-Men: Animated Series. A lot of queer nerds flocked to X-Men — they were the hot new superhero team (in terms of cartoons), they fought for acceptance, they seemed more based in reality than other heroes, people judged them just for being who they were. They were a lot like the queer community. And, well, some of us even had to have our father’s tape it because Saturday mornings were when we went to get our allergy shots. Some of us.

And, sometimes, just sometimes, the X-Men and their fight for equality meant a whole god damned motherfucking lot to young queer kids. That fight for acceptance while being rejected by society is what has made the X-Men so beloved to us. Their message is one that has resonated with anyone who has ever felt like an outcast, unfairly judged for being themselves, or hated for that reason alone. The comics, the cartoons, and the movies all touch upon this message of equality (some — ahem — doing a better job than others).

So, much like my fellow queer nerds, I look to the X-Men for inspiration during times like these. And I’m normally someone who thinks inspirational quotes are strictly for rolling your eyes at — but not when it comes to the X-Men. They’ve been fighting for equality since before Marvel even allowed us to have inspiring out characters like Northstar, (the unfortunately named) Anole or the newly outed Iceman. Their struggle is one we can relate to.

Emotions have been (understandably) high after the recent Orlando shooting where 49 of our queer brothers and sisters were brutally murdered. If you haven’t, you should watch Anderson Cooper reading the names and short bios for each victim because it’s important we remember them. You can also donate to help out the families of the victims. And have a good cry if you need to. I know I have.

So, keep fighting the fight. Don’t let yourself feel hopeless or anything less than proud to be the big sparkly queer that you are. Shine bright like Emma Frost in her god damned diamond form!

And, when times get tough, maybe you can look to some of these inspiring and relatable X-Men quotes and feel slightly less awful about the current state of things…
