The excellent blog Comics Should Be Good! this week spotlights a terrifying vision of the future from the DC comic Mystery in Space, published in 1952.
In the dystopian Earth of the 33rd century, women have replaced men as the dominant gender, leading in government, science, the military and sports, while men are consigned to domesticity and secretarial work:
Our brave hero resists such emasculation and resolves to become a pilot, in spite of rampant sexism that impedes him:
You might think that all this is leading to a progressive moral promoting gender equality, and recognizing the treatment of men in this future as equivalent to that of contemporary women.
Unfortunately, the author has other ideas, and by the end of the story it's time for a decidedly retro status quo:
Well, it was 1952.
