Overwatch: Queer Edition

Christmas has come early for queer gaymers. First we got the amazing news that there is going to be The Last of Us Part II. Now, Blizzard Entertainment released a webcomic based on the video game Overwatch. And one of its primary antagonists, a female character named Tracer, is revealed to have a girlfriend! There has been much fan-based gay shipping of the Overwatch characters, so it's nice that we get canon queer-lady love in the super popular MMO.

While it seems like mostly everyone is on board for this super exciting news, the webcomic is already banned in Russia for the same-sex kiss. This unsurprising (yet still disappointing) news shows the continued importance of queer representation in video games, television, and films. The more we are seen, the harder it will be to ignore us.

Emily is not one of Tracer's fellow members of the Overwatch team, but it seems as though the two are dating; in the webcomic they also attend Overwatch hero Winston's holiday dinner together. Blizzard Entertainment has hinted in the past that there are multiple queer characters in the game, so it will be exciting to see who comes out next!
